Recommended Online Doctoral Programs in Business

Methodology

This ranking is designed to find the best Doctorate in Business Management available. A list of over 100 doctoral programs was obtained and then vetted based on the following five factors. Each factor was adjusted to a 100-point scale, then evenly weighted and averaged for the overall ranking.

Accreditation: Accreditation is an important factor to understand when looking at available doctoral programs in business management. It is an outside party attesting to the quality of a program, and it also adds to the brand of a school, which inevitably adds to each students professional marketability. The programs within this ranking run across the full spectrum of accreditation in the US. The range runs from no accreditation, a nationally recognized accreditation, regional accreditation, and regional accreditation plus an additional business accreditation. The value of this criterion was factored lowest to highest in that order.

More specifically, the institutional national accreditation listed comes from the following organizations: the Distance Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC) and the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS). While these two accreditations are a nationally recognized accreditations of institutions in the US, it is important to note that the DEAC, mainly accrediting institutions providing distance education, can accredited programs up to the doctoral level and ACICS cannot. So, while the university and business school may be considered an ACICS accredited institution, the doctoral program is not considered an accredited program. These two accreditations are given a lower accreditation scoring.

The U.S. Department of Education recognizes six regional higher accrediting agencies: Middle States commission on Higher Education, New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Higher Learning Commission, Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and Western Association of Schools and Colleges. This level of accreditation covers the majority of public and private universities and schools with a more rigorous process than the national accreditation. In addition to the regional accreditation, business schools can pursue an additional business school accreditation. The programs with additional business accreditations were scored higher. These accredited bodies were IACBE, ACBSP, and AACSB. AACSB International-accredited schools were given the highest marks, as they are perceived as the most elite business schools.

Prestige: Data for this criterion was taken from US News and World Report, the Princeton Review, two of the most prestigious sites in the education sector. Data was gathered from each site on the awards that a school has been given. Specifically on US News and World Report, each school was checked to see if they were ranked on the National Universities list or a regional list, and on The Princeton Review if they were ranked on the Best 380, Best Regional, and Colleges that Pay You Back list.

Estimated Tuition Cost: Each doctoral program was considered based on the estimated tuition of the program. The tuition information gathered was the most recent data given from each specific program or school website.

Student Satisfaction: For student satisfaction, each school’s overall graduation rate was collected from the National Center for Education Statistics. This factor shows a school’s pattern on student satisfaction in their program. This rate shows if students were motivated to finish their degrees and shown the value of the time and money they were investing.

Business Management Curriculum: When looking at the business management curriculum, each program was checked to see if the core topics of finance, management, technology, and research we covered in the courses, giving students a solid exploration of business management.
